The Plot

Mok Sol-Hee (starred by Kim So-Hyun) possess an extraordinary ability, where she can literally hear a ding in her head when people lie.

She uses this to her advantage; successfully setting up her own gig where she helps rich people detect lies in exchange for money. Whether it’s uncovering a cheating spouse or exposing rich relatives attempting to embezzle money, Sol-Hee finds ample opportunities to earn a living.

This ability, however, comes with a downside. Since everyone naturally lies at some point in their life, Sol-Hee has had a hard time with those that are close to her. At the show’s start, she is left alone after having cut ties with her friends and family because of them not being completely truthful.

Kim Do-ha (starred by Hwang Min-hyun) is a successful music producer, who has been hiding himself from the public ever since a scandal broke out regarding him being involved in a murder case.

Mok Sol-Hee and Kim Do-ha find themselves as each other’s neighbours, and a romantic interest sparks between the them.

Over the course of the show, the two embark on a journey where the learn about each other’s past, their secrets and traumas.

Our Review: What We Liked About My Lovely Liar?

Here’s a list of things we loved about My Lovely Liar and would recommend you to binge-watch it for these reasons:

  • The importance of white lies: This show reminded us that some lies are good; the ones told with the intention of helping protect those around us.
  • Mystery: The show has a murder mystery case as part of the plot, and this aspect of the show is one of the reasons to keep you hooked through all 16 episodes.
  • Romance: We loved the slow and steady progression of our main character’s relationship and how it was based on deep, meaningful connection rather than infatuation. Bonus: If you’re a football fan and dream of watching football with your significant other, you’ll love this one.
  • Loneliness: Have you ever felt that over time, people who were close to you have left your life? They were wrong, or maybe you were wrong. Nevertheless, it makes you feel lonely and miss their company. This show does a great job of portraying this feeling.

Reasons Why You May Not Like My Lovely Liar

Our job is to tell you the truth

We are with Sol-hee on this one and our job is to tell you the truth 😄. Here are a few things we didn’t like about the show:

  • Side characters’ stories: Some of the scenes that featured side characters and their stories felt too dragged.
  • The comedy in this rom-com: The humor wasn’t the best, and we have seen better. If you’re hoping for funny, light-hearted scenes, you might be disappointed as we overall found this show to be more serious than funny.
  • Cluttered plot: We found some reviewers saying that the plot was good in the initial episodes, but they found themselves lost in the later ones. This can be true for you as well because the plot gets cluttered with extra bits that are not needed. Maybe you can skip some parts of the drama if need be 🤷.

Concluding Note

My Lovely Liar gave us another perspective. We often feel disheartened when someone close to us is dishonest, but it’s important to consider the reasons behind their lies before jumping to conclusions.

They may have a compelling reason to lie, perhaps even to protect us, and this might not be entirely unjustified.

We are by no means promoting dishonesty, and we should all be as truthful as possible. However, let’s try to be more empathetic and forgive other people for their white lies 🥰
