Our next Kdrama review is on Uncontrollably Fond, a popular show starring Bae-Suzy and Kim Woo-bin.
One of the things that stands out about this show is how complicated its plot is. Action, murder-mystery, horror, yes! But we have never seen a pure romance and melodrama get so complex as this one.
Nevertheless, it had me hooked through all 20 episodes when I watched it. But we understand when some viewers say that the show became too confusing for them.
Uncontrollably Fond may not be the best show out there; it has pros and cons. Read our review to find out if it’s worth binge-watching.
What is Uncontrollably Fond About?
Uncontrollably Fond is a show about two teenage sweethearts, who get separated in their childhood and later meet as adults when they live completely different lives. But that’s not it, and the show is more than that! It’s a story about the struggles of the rich and the poor, the challenges you face as being an orphan and someone powerless.
The female lead Noh Eul is starred by the famous Bae-Suzy. She is an orphan whose father was murdered, and the perpetrator got away with it due to power and influence. Noh Eul is struggling to make ends meet, working as a reporter and looking after her younger brother.

On the other hand, the male lead Shin Joon-Young (starred by Kim Woo-bin) is a rich and popular singer. On the surface, Shin Joon-Young seems to have it easy; money, fame, a large house with cars and dedicated staff. But deep down, Joon Young is struggling with family issues, loneliness and much more.

The two leads were dating each other in high school but got separated. In the present, they cross paths when Noh Eul decides to shoot a documentary on Shin Joon-Young. Back in high-school, their relationship used to be light and cheerful.

However, in the present, the two start off rough. They constantly argue and disagree with each other, and their relationship develops again over a series of episodes (which is one of the reasons we love this show β¨).
But the show isn’t that simple. Multiple other characters come into play. The third main character is Choi Ji-tae (starred by Lim Ji-Hwan) who belongs to a rich noble family and has a crush on our female lead Noh Eul.

Other notable characters in the show include Shin Joon-Young’s mother, Ji-tae’s father and sister, and Noh Eul’s brother. All of these characters have depth, and they are all intertwined. Does it seem confusing already? π
What We Loved About Uncontrollably Fond?
In this review, we have compiled a list of things we loved about Uncontrollably Fond. Read through and you’ll get an idea if this show is for you:
- Emotions and melodrama: If you’re someone who loves reading other people’s emotions and empathizing with them, then you’ll love this drama as we did too. Uncontrollably Fond’s melodramatic storytelling captivates with its authentic portrayal of raw emotions.
- Realism: Unlike fantasy-driven Kdramas featuring idealized love stories, Uncontrollably Fond offers a refreshingly realistic depiction of romance. The turbulent relationship between the main leads reflects the complexities and nuances of real-life partnerships.
- Life of orphans: Our parents are a true blessing π«Άβ¨. Uncontrollably Fond gives us perspective on the lives of orphans and how losing a parent is tough, and navigating through life without their support is even tougher.
- Great mother and son duo: The male lead has an interesting relationship with her mother, and we really enjoyed this duo.
- Struggles of both poor and the rich: We all know how lack of finances can be an issue, but little do we see things from the perspective of successful and rich people. This drama shows us that money and fame come with their own set of challenges, and the life of Shin Joon-Young is equally tough.

Does Uncontrollably Fond Have a Sad Ending?
Yes, it’s true. Uncontrollably Fond has a sad ending and we won’t recommend it to the faint of heart. If you easily get attached to characters and empathize with them, then you might find it tough to digest the ending.
Concluding Note
Uncontrollably Fond taught us that everyone seems okay on the surface. But if you dig deeper into their lives, you’ll find things to be complicated and far from perfect.
Uncontrollably Fond is a must-watch if you love melodrama and emotions. The beauty of the show doesn’t lie in the plot, but rather in the depth of each character’s life story and how they emotionally feel about it.
If you’re more into simpler straightforward stories, then it’s safe to skip this one.
