Featuring Blackpink’s famous Kim Ji-soo, Snowdrop is a Kdrama that is on all of our lists and needs a review. If you’re like us, you probably came across Snowdrop because of its cast; Kim Ji-soo and Jung Hae-in. No spoilers here, but we can tell that their acting in this drama is way too good 😍!

But it’s not just the acting that makes Snowdrop stand out. Set in 1980s, the drama is a combination of action, romance, politics, history, and much more.

Read our review to find out what the hype is about.

What is Snowdrop About?

Set in 1987, Snowdrop is a story about a university student who falls in love with a guy only later to realize that he is a North Korean spy.

Eun Yeong-ro starred by our Blackpink’s Ji-soo 🫰🏻, is a naive and hopeless romantic student. She’s the kind of person with idealistic romantic aspirations, one who notices the small things and would go above and beyond for their romantic interests.

She meets our male lead, Lim Soo-ho (starred by Jung Hae-in), on a group blind date, and a small romantic gesture sparks a dreamy attraction towards him. A few days later, Lim Soo-ho ends up in the female dormitory covered in blood while escaping authorities.

Eun Yeong-ro, under the impression that he is a student protestor, empathizes with his situation and helps him hide in the female dormitory, tending to his wounds and sneaking in food for him.

However, a twist of events reveals Lim Soo-ho’s true identity as a North Korean spy, and he ends up taking the entire dormitory as hostage along with his 2 other comrades.

Snowdrop is not just about romance. The hostage situation and the comrades’ attempt to escape add a whole bunch of action scenes to the drama.

Snowdrop is also about politics with a similarity to South Korea’s democratic movement in the 1980s. While the producers affirm that the story is entirely fictional, it has nonetheless ignited controversy among certain individuals. In fact, a petition was signed by over 200,000 people to stop Snowdrop from airing on grounds for distorting history.

Why We Loved Snowdrop?

Here’s a list of things we loved about Snowdrop and would recommend you to binge-watch it for these reasons:

  • Romance: The chemistry between the characters and how their relationship developed and changed over time was great. It was different and we enjoyed it.
  • 80s theme: The 80s vibe really stood out! From fashion to architecture, it was all well executed.
  • Politics: The show illustrates the manipulation of power by those in authority, blurring the lines between right and wrong as the comrades holding the girls captive may be fighting for a just cause. Despite this ambiguity, the mystery will keep you hooked.
  • Variety of characters: The show has multiple characters, and their development through the episodes is great. There are Eun Yeong-ro’s friends, the dormitory warden and caretaker, South Korean officers, political figures, and many more.
  • Dormitory life: Living alone away from family, with your roommates, hiding from your strict warden. The dormitory life portrayed in this show will spark nostalgia for some of you.

Reasons Why Snowdrop Might Not be the Show for You

Despite the hype, there might be reasons why you wouldn’t want to watch this show.

To help you decide, we have listed some things that weren’t that great about Snowdrop:

  • Overdone action: The action wasn’t logical at times, and some of the scenes were so stupid that you might want to facepalm yourself in disappointment 🤦
  • Complicated storyline: At some point in the show, we felt lost. Some things didn’t make sense, and others didn’t connect well. However, rest assured, the main characters’ storyline remained relatively straightforward and comprehensible.
  • Not a fan of classics: If you like modern shows, this 1980s show might not appeal to you.
  • Seemed like a stretch: It’s just our opinion, but we felt that the show could have been two to three episodes shorter.

Concluding Note

Jisoo’s acting in Snowdrop was phenomenal, and she played her character really well. Our friend Hae-in agrees with this as well, though not so much with her singing 🙈.

While the acting was great and the main leads had a great storyline through the show, we can’t say the same for the rest of it. Some parts of the show just didn’t seem well, but you could always skip them and focus on the scenes that catch your interest 😅.
